10 Very Important Facts You Need To Know About The H1N1 Virus

Like it or not the H1N1 Virus or Swine Flu is upon us. There is shortage of the vaccine, so you have to reduce the risk to you and your family. Here are 10 of the most important points you need to know for your protection and prevention of the virus:

  • Pregnant women need only one shot – the injectable version which contains the dead virus, rather than the nasal spray which contains a live but weakened virus.
  • Adults and children over 10 need only 1 dose of the vaccine for full immunity.
  • Children 6 months to 9 years need 2 doses, spaced about a month apart, to mount a strong enough immune response if exposed to the virus.
  • Use a hand sanitizer rather than soap to keep you hands germ free. It should contain at least 60% alcohol. Incidentally, the hand sanitizer leaves the skin less dry than soap as most products contain emollients that add moisture.
  • Stick to the FDA approved swine flu remedies. There are a lot of bogus products like shampoos or dietary supplements purporting to protect against virus.
  • The anti viral drug – Tamiflu is only available through a prescription. Those that are available on-line are bogus.
  • Warning signs that warrant an emergency room visit: breathing difficulty or chest pains, purple or blue discoloration of the lips, inability to keep liquids down, signs of dehydration-extreme thirst, dizziness, convulsions or seizures.
  • The vaccine does not pose a health risk. The only adverse reactions are a mild swelling or pain at the injection site.
  • High risk individuals- pregnant women and infants should avoid travel, unless you have been vaccinated.
  • Those who have a fever should stay at home.
