The Swine Flu or H1N1 virus is sweeping throughout the world. It has to be treated in time otherwise it can become fatal and life threatening. Children are at one of the highest risks of being infected due to their weak immune system, and they have the greatest chance of contracting the H1N1 virus.
There are a number of things that you as a parent can do to prevent your children from contracting this virus. The key for protecting is preventing and below is a list of actions you must take to ensure that your children are well protected:
- It is very important that you discuss the Swine flu and its implications with your children.
- Teach your children to keep a safe distance from sick kids who have runny noses, colds and coughs.
- Keep pushing your kids to wash their hands frequently.
- Keep a hand sanitizer bottle, anti bacterial wipes, and other sanitizing agents scattered throughout your house.
- Remind your children not to share drinks, food, candy or anything else that can come in contact with other children’s mouths.
- Give your children healthy foods which are high in nutrients; ensure that they drink plenty of water and take daily vitamin supplements.
- Teach them to cover their nose and mouth when they sneeze or cough: whether using a tissue or covering their face with their elbows.
- Ensure that they are given the flu vaccine.
- Obtain videos and other materials that are kid-friendly and explain the swine flu virus to your kids.
- Avoid taking your children to large gatherings and crowds – if possible.
If your child does contract the flu, keep him/her at home to prevent further spread of the virus. Keep them well rested and well hydrated.
American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that all children over 6 months be vaccinated against swine flu.
